The Financial Intelligence Office (or GIF) of Macau has published the region’s statistics of Suspicious Transaction Report (STRs) for the first half of 2020. The report has divided STRs into three categories based on their origin: the financial sector, the gaming sector, and other institutions.
GIF received 947 STRs during the first half of 2020. This is 31.2% lower than the reports received during the first half of 2019. The decrease in the number of STRs was prominently observed in the gaming sector and the financial sector.
In the first half of 2020, the financial sector generated 35.1% of the total STRs. For comparison, 27.7% of the STRs came from the financial sector during the same period in 2019. On the other hand, the gaming sector contributed to 49% of the total STRs in the first half of 2020, while the contribution was much higher (70.2%) during the same period in 2019.
