The Senate will be able to pass several measures giving more teeth to the anti-money laundering law next week before Congress goes on break, in an effort to beat the deadline of an international group and avoid being blacklisted.
In a conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) on Friday, Sen. Teofisto Guingona III said he is confident that the measures seeking to strengthen the anti-money laundering act will be passed before the May deadline of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), despite the ongoing impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Senate Bill 3009, which allows the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) to inspect bank accounts it deems suspicious even without informing the depositor first, is already at the Senate plenary awaiting second and third reading.
“I think that’s not contentious. That will pass,” said Guingona, one of the bill’s authors. “We do have one week next week.”
