There have been series of investigation across Portugal into the houses, football clubs, lawyers and agents’ offices as part of the investigation into alleged money laundering and tax fraud in the world of football. Authorities searched the house of Spain’s 2010 World Cup willing captain Iker Casillas on Wednesday. In a tweet, Casillas stated that he believes in the Portuguese judicial system and wishes that transparency reaches every corner of football.
The operation is aimed at individuals who evade tax in the football business from 2015. Big clubs in Portugal, including Porto have reacted to this, as Porto claimed that it has been the target of the searches and would collaborate with the investigation. It was noted that Casillas announced last month of his intention to contest for the president of the Spanish Football Federation when elections start later this year.
